Toby began his career as a law costs draftsman in Southampton in 1992 and went on to hold various senior positions in and around London and the South East. He became an Associate of the Association of Law Costs Draftsmen (now known as the Association of Costs Lawyers) in 2000 and a Fellow in 2002 before setting up T M Costings Ltd in 2005. He was one of the first Fellow Members of the ALCD to be granted higher rights in July 2007 and to attain the title Costs Lawyer. Toby has been closely involved in a number of high profile cases and has developed a particular specialism in a number of areas,, including high value personal injury, clinical negligence, commercial litigation and civil liberties matters, particulary actions against the police and death in custody cases.
Upon leaving school after attaining his A-Levels, Tom originally pursued a career as a Chef. Whilst his cooking talents where never questioned he quickly realised that the route to becoming a celebrity chef was fraught with peril! With that in mind he turned his attention to his other talents, namely numbers. He quickly found a position within the costs team of a medium sized law firm dealing predominately with civil litigation and all aspects of personal injury.
His passion for legal costs developed thereafter as his technical skills as a junior draftsman flourished by further embracing the challenges of negotiation and detailed assessment. His enjoyment for unravelling technical points drove him in such matters to find a positive resolution where possible, leaving no stone unturned. He progressed through the ranks and took over the reigns of the Costs Team as Costs Manager within his previous firm for the last 10 years prior to leaving and joining TMC in the spring of 2010.
Tom therefore has a wide range of experience concerning all areas of civil litigation costs and applies that knowledge to ensure that the best results for his clients are attained each and every time. He was responsible for drafting his previous firm's CFAs and client care correspondence to ensure that the same were fully compliant.

Ruth is always happy to assist clients with any queries and will always work to provide swift responses.

Having obtained a 2:1 LLB Hons from Leicester Poytechnic, Michael announced that he was suspending his plans for a career in the law to pursue his dream of writing for film and television. In spite of some favourable feedback, and it must be said a few rejection letters, he decided in 1994 to join his father's firm of law costs draftsmen A.C. Costing Ltd. Whilst at this firm he acquired a solid grounding in all manner of publicly and privately funded work, which over the following years he has built upon with lengthy stints at two leading costs drafting firms in the City. During this period he has also become a regular advocate in the County Courts, the SCCO and, on one occasion, even the Privy Council. Whilst waiting for the call from Hollywood he presently specialises in the fields of personal injury, clinical negligence, and commercial litigation.

John was educated at Royal Grammar School, later obtaining a Single Honours Law Degree (LLB) from Swansea University. He is currently starting his second year of the ACL course and specialises in preparing a range of detailed family and civil Bills of Costs for assessment. John has extensive experience of matters relating to children (including public and private law proceedings), general civil and housing cases (including prison law matters) and Judicial Reviews.
John joined TMC in January 2014 and has made admirable progress in developing his skill-base across both Legal Aid and inter partes matters. Furthermore, his law background and talent for English often produce detailed and insightful narratives.
Although specialising, for the moment, in Legal Aid matters; John also has experience of preparing costs estimates/schedules, as well as large inter partes Bills in clinical negligence and personal injury cases. He has also prepared High Costs Case reports for the LAA and is very familiar with the rules governing the Family Advocacy Scheme.
